About

My lab is a group of biophysicists and bioengineers focused on cultivating an often overlooked attribute in science: curiosity. From worm blobs to cyborg cells to $1 hearing aids, we study how organisms do extraordinary things, uncover the physics behind life’s remarkable materials, and translate simple ideas into frugal technologies for global health. What we’re currently working on: 🦑 Squid-inspired propulsion — learning how squids move to design marine vehicles that are more efficient and stealthy 🍜 Frugal Raman spectroscopy (not the noodles) — building low-cost, AI-enabled diagnostic tools for use anywhere in the world 💡 Light-based diagnostics — using photons to perform tests traditionally done with chemicals, RNA, or DNA 🪱 Living knots and tangles — studying how organisms braid, knot, and unknot to inspire smart, shape-shifting materials 🐜 Collective intelligence in insects — understanding how termites build vast tunnel networks one grain at a time, with implications for decentralized construction and mobile 3D printing If you’re interested in learning more about our work, visit: 👉 https://bhamla.gatech.edu/
