About

After 30 years as a math professor at Bakersfield College, I've retired to pursue my long interests in AI and machine learning by pursuing a PhD at UC Santa Cruz. My research was focused on biomedical applications of machine learning, but has recently shifted to large language models. For the past two years I worked as a deep learning engineer for the consulting firm, Ideas Siero Labs. There I worked with a small team creating a computer vision system for a heart catheter, utilizing optical coherence tomography. The catheter was successful in human trials, and hopefully will significantly improve heart surgery outcomes. Previously I completed an MS in computer science (with a machine learning specialization) from Georgia Tech, and an MS in mathematics from UC Irvine (I was also advanced to candidacy for a PhD focusing in algebraic geometry). I've also completed dozens of MOOCs, including the Coursera Deep Learning Specialization. It was Andrew Ng's first (pre Coursera) MOOC in machine learning that got me started down this particular rabbit hole! My past software engineering gigs include a stint at Hughes Aircraft Company working on the Hughes Air Defense Radar system, followed by four years at the UC Irvine Brain Imaging Lab, where I worked on EEG brain mapping and PET images (spatial statistics on groups of images for various studies). I also worked as a Senior Programmer at Dest Corporation in Milpitas on an image editing software project.
