  • I led the editorial technology team at the Financial Times in London. They are responsible for Spark, the FT's own home-grown content management system, charged with the publishing of over a thousand articles and content pieces a week from bureaus staffed 24/7.
  • Spark is a full-service CMS, with media management, wire services, curation and planning tools, and is able to publish content via articles, live blogs, content packages, newsletters, and push notifications.
  • I am an expert in digital publishing, especially at large news organisations, and the capabilities and relationships needed to create exceptional experiences for readers and journalists.

  • Leading a team of five editorial software engineers full time as a editorially titled technical product manager across various editorial projects with tight deadlines.
  • Using data to better support how we serve readers, and working with UX and design teams to glean insights on how we best present our editorial coverage to correspond with our business targets.
  • Focused on efficiency and capability on the side of editorial production, in 2017 I started a new 8-person team of software engineers to work on a custom node CMS for home-page curation and production, set to replace the third party java client this process was previously hacked into.
  • Benefits included a decrease in editorial production cost (up to 500x faster processes in some areas), and a better time-to-market for new editorial features and products through consolidation of code bases, reducing the inertia new features needed to overcome.
  • Over the course of the time developing the product I conducted user interviews and testing with both real-world and prototype applications, used quantitative data to support arguments for and against product features, and become involved in early-stage wireframing and UI design for testing.
  • This was described as some of the best written and managed software at News Corp globally by the VP of Technology and CTO.
  • I have built up extensive and exclusive knowledge of editorial content management, production and processes at large news organisations as a result.
  • Further experience since 2013 of working closely with software developers to manage editorial projects through to release, both on reader product and storytelling. These included items such as general election coverage, and special reporting.

  • As a part of the Digital Strategy and Development team across The Times and Sunday Times I was a generalist on the team, specialising in management of the Times's content management systems, integration points with third party partners, and the development of our journalism into new formats.
  • I worked across software development; product management; concepting, prototyping and testing our new edition-based publishing model; managing change and transition through new workflows; introducing new tools and services to both the development team and editorial customers; managing training sessions for customer service agents; delivering weekly analysis on digital media strategy from competitors near and far; pitching for, budgeting and personally running four hackday weekends for students as part of corporate social responsibility initiatives and hiring opportunities; automated or upskilled other employees to reduce my workload from two people to one; producing editorial stories, interviews, and photography.

Freelance Sub-Editor

Dec 2011Jun 2013 · 1 yr 6 mos

  • Duty revise editor and sub producing the tablet edition of The Times newspaper to over 100,000 subscribers at night during my studies at University.
  • Initially this involved work in an Adobe InDesign based CMS, where I was one of the top contributors in terms of page turnaround from print. Later it involved the transition to a custom-built solution which I helped manage the process of. I then helped modify the custom system using my technical understanding to improve the look and feel of the product using tools already available without introducing tech debt.

The elephant

Founding Editor

Jan 2011Jan 2013 · 2 yrs

  • The Elephant was my community enterprise project to improve the quality of student journalism and the prospects of student journalists at Queen Mary. Self funded through my night shifts at The Times, I put together a team of 12 students to produce two printed issues and live online coverage for important student elections and events.
  • In our Halloween issue, I personally uncovered a data breach in the NHS at a local disused psychiatric hospital, with hundreds of patient records packed in plastic bags on a relatively unguarded site. The story resulted in the Trust visiting the site and confirming the removal and destruction of these records.
