About

I am currently serving as an Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad, Karnataka with over 17 years of experience spanning academia, research, and industry. Previously, I was a faculty member at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Nagpur, Maharashtra, where I was actively engaged in both teaching and research. My postdoctoral research at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), USA, focused on formulation science—encapsulation of nano-APIs in polymer strip films, nanocomposite particles, and optimizing particulate processes such as media milling and convective drying. I also bring two years of industrial experience from Battelle Science and Technology India, Pune, Maharashtra, where I worked on product development, catalyst design, chemical process design, patent analysis, and technology assessment. My Ph.D. research at IIT Bombay centered on colloids and interfacial science, specifically the synthesis and application of magnetic and semiconductor nanoparticles for biomedical and electronics applications. Key Skills & Expertise: Colloids and Interface Science, Nanoparticle Synthesis & Mechanistic Understanding Modeling & Simulation of Particulate Processes Catalysis and Process Intensification Drug Delivery Systems & Controlled Release Formulations Chemical Process Design & Optimization Water and Wastewater Treatment Technologies Proficiency in Matlab, Fortran, and web-based simulation tools

  • Prepared solid biodegradable micronanocomposites with desired drug loading for fast releasing poorly water soluble API’s by fluid bed coating of API nanoparticles on to an inert carrier.
  • Developed strategies in producing micro and nano-suspensions with desired loading, particle size distribution and stability, characterized the pharmaceutical products.
  • Optimized suspension formulation, through preliminary screening of nano-suspensions at different polymer and surfactant compositions.
  • Optimized wet stirred media milling process using an intensified methodology for the preparation of sub-100 nm drug particle with 40% energy savings, reduced time and media wear.
  • Developed a universal, semi-theoretical correlation between the particle breakage rate and the milling intensity factor for all mill process parameters.
  • Oral polymer strip film formation for control (fast, extended and delayed) delivery of drug nanoparticles.
  • Screened various polymers for film formulation and developed thin and thick strip films.
  • Designed and built a lab-scale dryer setup for drying of thin films, and modeled the drying kinetics.

Research Scientist

Aug 2010Aug 2012 · 2 yrs · Pune Area, India

  • Research Scientist, Materials and Process Engineering Division, Battelle-India, Pune, Maharastra (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Battelle Columbus, Ohio – a large US based multinational worth $ 6.5 billion, engaged in technology and new product development and commercialization )
  • Technical Contributions:**
  • Developed a cost-effective solid-acid heterogeneous catalyst for transesterification reactions, enabling easy recovery, minimal purification steps, and production of high-purity glycerol as a byproduct.
  • Led the design and process development of a pilot-scale coal pyrolysis plant and pig iron production system for a leading agrochemical firm in Mumbai. Responsibilities included material and energy balances, process flow diagram (PFD) creation, material procurement, lab and on-site testing, and turnkey project implementation.
  • Designed an electrocoagulation system for treatment of high-TDS frac flowback water, identifying technical gaps in existing hydro-frac water treatment methods and proposing efficient, scalable solutions.
  • Authored detailed technical reports and proposals for internal use and external funding agencies.
  • Business Development:**
  • Conducted a comprehensive technology and market analysis on CO₂ separation processes, delivering strategic insights for a U.S.-based client exploring new market opportunities.
  • Collaborated with product marketing and business intelligence teams to identify emerging business and technology trends.
  • Contributed to the creation of product development roadmaps by aligning technical milestones with market needs and client feedback.
  • Supported client engagement through technical presentations, solution proposals, and by translating customer requirements into actionable R&D initiatives.
