Transparent Chennai (www.transparentchennai.com) is a project that aims to provide useful, easy-to-understand information about the city that can improve government accountability and empower residents who want to take action. It is housed at the Centre for Development Finance (CDF), Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR).
Through maps, issue briefs and analysis of RTI information, it focuses on building a body of research on four issues in Chennai: electoral accountability, public sanitation, informal settlements, and road safety. My work was focused on developing research that used counter-mapping and new media techniques as tools for empowerment and re-conceptualizing space. I also focused on developing and improving the project’s methodologies for community engagement, collecting open spatial data and geospatial visualization.
