During my time at Colorado State University, I worked as both a Developer and Researcher focusing on how Virtual Reality can improve cybersecurity education. I helped design and build an immersive VR training system that teaches students how to create and configure virtual machines on Microsoft Azure by turning the entire workflow into a hands-on, interactive 3D experience.
Instead of reading long, technical documents, students could walk around a virtual server room, pick up components, configure settings, and actually “see” how cloud resources connect — which made the learning process more intuitive and less overwhelming.
Alongside the development work, I conducted a full experimental study comparing VR-based learning to traditional desktop instructions. I collected and analyzed data on task completion time, usability (SUS), workload (NASA-TLX), and pre/post knowledge gains. This work is now part of a research paper I am co-authoring, which examines how immersive environments can bridge the gap between theory and practice for IS students learning cybersecurity concepts.
Through this role, I was able to combine my technical skills in development with my interest in human–computer interaction and education, and contribute to a project that helps make complex cybersecurity tasks easier and more engaging for learners.
