Born to Dutch parents in Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia, Bert grew up in Te Awamutu in the north island of New Zealand. After achieving a B.Sc. in microbiology at Otago University, Bert entered the Otago Medical School in Dunedin and graduated in 1975. Following internship, Dr. Vorstman finished a residency in urology at Auckland Hospital, New Zealand in 1981 and then a chief residency at Jackson Memorial hospital in Miami, Florida. Subsequently, he completed fellowship training in Pediatric and Adult Reconstructive Urology at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. During his time there he also undertook NIH-sponsored, pioneering research on “Nerve Root Surgery for Urinary Bladder Reinnervation” earning him the honor of a Masters of Surgery Diploma through the University of Otago. Dr Vorstman returned to Miami to become a board-certified faculty member in the department of urology, Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami. Eventually, he left academic practice, moved north of Miami to Coral Springs and established Florida Urological Associates pa and eventually a website www.HEALTHdrum.com. Dr. Vorstman was also instrumental in developing an outpatient surgical center, The Coral Springs Surgical Center. A majority of the shares were eventually purchased by Amsurg. After retiring and leaving colleagues to continue the urology practice, he became focused on digital healthcare options for generally affordable routine office-based and outpatient services to restore patient, physician and provider autonomy. Bert Vorstman BSc, MD, MS, FAAP, FRACS, FACS is passionate about consumer-directed care and delivering information that sorts fact from fiction in healthcare. He's also interested in collaborating with those looking to disrupt the current costly, inconvenient and highly inefficient healthcare system. Bert's Dutch grandmother was Amy Groskamp-ten Have. When his dad was a boy her then married name was Amy Vorstman-ten Have. She was a famous author, translator, magazine writer and radio speaker in the Netherlands. She was the author of the best selling Dutch etiquette book of all time, Hoe Hoort Het Eigenlijk? (How Does It Actually Belong?) in 1939. Bert and his Cuban born wife Lourdes, live in Coral Springs with family and grandchildren close by. He likes to travel back home to New Zealand to enjoy its wild outdoors and natural beauty. He has a sister Renee and brother Tom still living in New Zealand.
