About

Seasoned engineering executive with 16+ years of experience running large, geographically distributed teams that work on products used by billions of users around the world. I have held technical roles that span a variety of areas including large-scale distributed systems, front-end technologies, data security, privacy through encryption, system reliability, and regulatory compliance. I have architected and led multiple planet-scale server re-architecture and associated data migration efforts with focus on performance, reliability and zero data-loss. I have built products that serve both consumer and enterprise audiences that work across different platforms (e.g., Web, iOS, Android, Tablet, Wearables). My latest role involves transforming Gmail into a modern communication platform powered by ML/AI technologies including Large language models (LLMs). In this role, I manage a global team of 300+ engineers across multiple geographical sites in North America. I collaborate closely with Product, UX, and Data Science teams, determine the overall product strategy and supercharge engineering teams for velocity and execution without sacrificing quality. Though my current focus is on Gmail, over years, I have worked on several horizontal efforts that span products including Drive, Calendar, and Chat. On the people side, I have managed large teams and grown leaders that hold senior positions inside and outside Google.

  • As an Engineering Director, I built and led engineering teams (200+ eng) that delivered several critical, large-scale features for our enterprise customers in the areas of digital sovereignty and zero trust. These efforts opened up large business opportunities for Google Workspace in the public sector and large enterprise markets. Some of the efforts I helped deliver with my senior team include Gmail Client Side Encryption (https://workspace.google.com/blog/product-announcements/gmail-and-calendar-client-side-encryption), Data Regions and Zero-Trust controls (https://workspace.google.com/blog/identity-and-security/accelerating-zero-trust-and-digital-sovereignty-ai)
  • My teams were also responsible for finishing one of the largest data migrations involving Spanner. This work won our team several Google-wide recognitions as well as got show-cased on Google Cloud Next as how Google Cloud customers can safely migrate their data to Spanner.(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=268jdNwH6AM&t=3020s).

  • My initial years in Google were focused on building backend infrastructure for Gmail. The efforts involved building backend components (e.g., transactionality, indexing, APIs) as well as infra modernization efforts that involve migrating exabytes of data into modern backends (some of which I built) with a focus on cost minimization and zero data loss.
  • As Tech Lead Manager (TLM), I helped re-architect the Gmail backend business logic on top of Spanner, a complete re-think of the previous Bigtable-based backend. I also simultaneously managed and optimized the email delivery infrastructure. I also took leadership of security and compliance teams and helped land efforts such as GDPR.
  • Apart from Gmail, I also helped modernize the Google Chat messaging backend. One of my key efforts involved building necessary infrastructure and converging Google Hangouts with Google Chat, greatly reducing production incidents and making it ready for large-scale adoption.
