About

I've been obsessed with building web apps since 2006. Many hats have been worn in these 19 years: creating popular JavaScript libraries, running a successful web dev blog, giving talks at web conferences, reviewing tech books, working as a contractor, working for big tech, working for explosive startups, working on my own startup, or not working as much and enjoying other aspects of life. Currently exploring cutting edge AI-assisted code tooling and techniques and writing about them. Designing a fitness app as an experiment (think Strava for CrossFit). Talk to me if you're at the intersection of fitness and tech.

Wework

Senior Software Engineer

Apr 2017Jan 2020 · 2 yrs 9 mos · Greater New York City Area

  • I'm primarily working on a large, front-end-heavy application that empowers community managers to provide better hospitality to WeWork members — including but not limited to billing, inventory, event planning, office move-in-move-outs, and room bookings.
  • The app is a 220K+ LOC of JavaScript (React, Redux, thunks, Flow, Webpack, Babel and all that jazz) and is backed by a myriad of microservices.
  • With 5+ teams and 50+ developers contributing to the same codebase, my goal is to be able to scale both the internal development process and the external user experience, focusing on:
  • Can we provide better tooling for adding user-facing features quickly and safely?
  • Can we maintain code quality with 50+ deploys per day?
  • Can we catch and prevent errors before they make it to production?
  • Can we seamlessly roll out large infrastructure changes that affect hundreds of files, developer experience, onboarding, and more?
  • Can we create a collaborative culture of learning, inclusion, blameless post mortems; where we balance healthy, continuous tech-debt management with quick deliveries?
  • Outside of my team, I'm often involved in:
  • Recruiting (70+ people so far) and helping improve the mission-wide interview process
  • Sharing our work with the public (https://engineering.wework.com)
  • Mentoring and onboarding junior engineers
  • Presenting and participating in an internal front-end guild/meetups
  • Helping other teams improve both technical and operational processes
