About

Large software systems rarely fail because of one bad decision. They degrade slowly when architecture, incentives, and ownership drift apart. I work at the intersection of large-scale backend systems, architecture, and engineering organizations, focusing on keeping systems healthy as they grow. For nearly two decades I have been building and evolving Ruby and Ruby on Rails applications that started as early startup codebases and grew into complex production platforms. Over time my work naturally shifted from building features to stewarding systems over the long term. Much of my work sits where architecture, delivery, and engineering culture meet. Typical problems I work on include improving reliability and operational safety in large Rails systems, evolving monolithic architectures without disrupting delivery, clarifying ownership boundaries between teams and services, mentoring senior engineers, and helping organizations develop stronger technical leadership. In many companies this role lives somewhere between Principal Engineer, Engineering Manager, and technical advisor to leadership. I often work close to founders, CTOs, and VP Engineering when technical decisions begin shaping the long-term trajectory of a system. I still enjoy being hands-on in Ruby and Ruby on Rails systems, especially when solving hard problems around reliability, performance, and architecture. What motivates me most is building systems and engineering organizations that remain clear, reliable, and maintainable over many years.

Storyblok

Senior Engineering Manager (Backend Team)

Dec 2024Present · 1 yr 5 mos · Linz · Remote

  • I lead the Backend Engineering group (≈15 engineers) including two Engineering Managers. Backend engineers work across several cross-functional product teams. My role focuses on organizational design, engineering quality, hiring, and long-term technical direction of the backend platform.
  • My role combines people leadership with deep technical involvement. I focus on backend architecture, system reliability, code quality, and sustainable delivery across long-running codebases. I stay close to critical technical decisions and act as a technical anchor where clarity, risk mitigation, or stabilization is required.
  • Storyblok operates at very high request volumes with globally distributed enterprise customers and a complex integration landscape. A key part of my work is ensuring that systems scale predictably, remain observable and operable under load, and can evolve without compromising reliability or developer velocity.

Localyze

Principal Engineer (and People Management)

Jun 2022Nov 2024 · 2 yrs 5 mos · Berlin, Berlin, Germany · Remote

  • Acted as the CTO’s right hand with responsibility for the technical health, security, and long-term evolution of a Ruby on Rails platform in a regulated domain.
  • Worked across teams to define architectural standards, led critical initiatives around authentication, authorization, and compliance, and combined strategic system stewardship with hands-on work in sensitive areas of the codebase.
  • The platform supported a rapidly growing customer base with strict data protection requirements. My focus was scaling the system safely: reducing architectural risk, hardening critical paths, and ensuring that growth in traffic, data volume, and organizational complexity did not outpace system stability.
