About

Backend systems are carrying far more complexity than the tools behind them were ever designed for. To ship anything real today, teams end up building APIs, background jobs, queues, workflows, event buses, observability tools, state, streaming, and now AI frameworks that were never designed to work as one system. It sort of works, until it doesn’t. Then debugging, scaling, and operating the system becomes the actual job. That’s the problem I’ve spent most of my career dealing with. I’ve built backend systems, automation platforms, and workflows across multiple languages and stacks. What I kept running into was the same pattern: as complexity increases, it gets shoved into a new tool, and engineers are left gluing everything together by hand. That’s why I built Motia. Motia is a backend framework built around a simpler core primitive for real systems. Instead of treating APIs, cron jobs, queues, workflows, durable execution and agents as separate categories, it treats them as the same thing: triggered remote execution. The goal is to let engineers focus on behavior and logic, while orchestration, state, retries, streaming, and observability are handled underneath. If React abstracted the DOM for frontend developers, Motia is aiming for a similar kind of abstraction on the backend. Most of my work today focuses on problems like: • Backend orchestration and event-driven systems • AI systems in production, not demos • Service management • Durable execution, durable state, durable streams • Why over-assembled architectures break at scale I’m also a co-founder and board member at FullStack Labs, where I’ve worked closely with engineering teams on production systems, scaling challenges, and long-term technical tradeoffs. Most of the work I do today is centered on reducing backend complexity and helping teams build systems that can scale without becoming fragile or impossible to reason about.
