About

I'm a Principal Engineer / Architect and Engineering Manager with 25+ years of experience in backend development, distributed systems, and large-scale Java and cloud platforms, currently open to the right next opportunity. I'm considering both senior IC leadership (Staff/Principal/Architect) and engineering management, and I've operated effectively in both tracks. Most recently I spent seven years at Atlassian, split between a Principal Engineer role and leading the Developer Experience organization as Senior Engineering Manager. On the management side, I built and scaled the DevEx team from 2 to 17 engineers, driving developer productivity and quality for around 500 developers across the org. On the IC side, I led both developer productivity and large-scale modernization work: monolith re-architecture, OSGi and JDK migrations, and modular build infrastructure. The throughput numbers are ones I'm proud of: 70% reduction in both local and CI build times, CI cycles cut from 66 to 20 minutes, and release frequency more than tripled while maintaining quality. My deepest technical strengths are in backend infrastructure, CI/CD, distributed systems architecture, and developer experience: the unglamorous but high-leverage work that compounds across an entire engineering organization. I've spent a lot of time thinking about how to make large codebases legible, maintainable, and fast to ship from. I've been around long enough to have run Linux since before 1.0 (my first public-facing server went live in 1994), and I enjoy low-level systems work every bit as much as high-level design. If you're building or scaling a platform, developer productivity, or infrastructure engineering function, I'd be glad to connect. Same if you need someone who can credibly lead both architecture decisions and engineering teams.

Principal Engineer (Architect), Confluence Cloud

Promoted

Nov 2023Mar 2026 · 2 yrs 4 mos

  • Currently driving monolith re-architecture for Confluence Cloud to enable modular services, faster builds, and clearer code ownership. Re-introduced incremental build tooling, reducing build times where only one module changed from several minutes to under 30 seconds. Providing technical leadership on development velocity, modularization, and system reliability, with a continued focus on mentoring teams and building internal expertise around large-scale legacy platforms.
  • Previously, architect for Confluence's FedRAMP Moderate effort, primarily focusing on readying the Java monolith for deployment in a compliant environment. In addition to direct technical contributions, spent a lot of time mentoring to build skills with the monolith (and legacy Java code) in a previously microservice-heavy team.

Senior Engineering Manager, Confluence Cloud Developer Experience

Promoted

Jan 2020Oct 2023 · 3 yrs 9 mos

  • The Developer Experience team is an internal facing team, responsible for all aspects of improving productivity and ensuring quality for around 400 back-end engineers working on the Confluence Cloud product.
  • Grew team from two engineers to seventeen in three squads; previously had one squad reporting indirectly.
  • Successfully coached and navigated the promotion cycle for multiple engineers, including Senior to Principal and Senior to Engineering Manager
  • As a platform team, we drove projects to modernize the Confluence monolith library/JVM usage, including retiring Jackson 1 and upgrading the JDK used twice, from 8 to 11 and then 11 to 17, and completed the migration of all Java plugins to a single build/monorepo.
  • Reduced Confluence monolith local build-restart time times from roughly 10 minutes to 4 minutes, and CI build/test times from over 60 minutes to 20 minutes
  • Improved Confluence Cloud BE monolith release cycle frequency from 4 to 14 production releases per week and median release latency from 72+ hours to < 24 hours, as well as fully-continuous releases to staging and the internal pre-prod environment used by 10,000 Atlassians.
  • Led the team in acting capacity starting in Jan 2020; formally transferred to the management position in May 2020. Promoted to Senior Engineering Manager fall 2023.
