  • Worked in the Cloud and Enterprise division’s Azure Backup team to deliver on backup solutions for Azure and enterprises.
  • My work here involved building a zero-infrastructure, cloud-native backup solution for workloads hosted in Azure. Specifically, this involved building an Azure IaaS VM extension to deliver on data protection for workloads running in the VM - like SQL Server, SAP Hana etc. The extension is built ground up in a generic plug and play fashion so that third parties can write plugins for it and support their own workload. Going forward in the coming 5 years, this is seen as a key revenue driver for our service.
  • Designed and built key infrastructural components for the extension to support various operations, including backup and recovery, on any given workload. This involved designing and building a framework which could allow defining and running generic finite state machines, while at the same time taking care of things like concurrency and throttling requirements of the workload targetted for running.
  • Core team member responsible for developing the extension and the related Azure Backup services.
  • This feature went Public Preview on June 4th, 2018. More information on Public Preview can be found in the below blog post by our CVP, Corey Sanders (PFA the link). Also, PFA a tutorial on how to use our service.
  • [UPDATE - November 2019]: This feature was made generally available for all customers in Azure this past year in April. Announcement of the same here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/azure-backup-for-sql-server-in-azure-virtual-machines-now-generally-available/.

  • Worked on secondary backup using PIT(Point-in-time) copy semantics in Microsoft Data Protection Manager.
  • Designed and developed an OS level component for change tracking on a volume in DPM server using bitmaps.
  • Integrated the new component with Microsoft Azure Backup Server, so that it can use the bitmaps generated by the component for tracking changes and transferring data.
  • End-to-end working prototype of improved secondary backup in DPM-Azure scenario.
  • Received Pre-Placement Offer from Microsoft India.
