About

I'm an engineering leader who gets genuinely excited by hard problems — and even more so by the moment a great product lands in a user's hands and makes a real difference to them and the business behind it. My career has taken me across industrial systems, medical devices, robotics, factory automation and design consultancy — from seed-stage start-ups to large multinationals, in the UK, Netherlands and Japan. What ties it together is a love of high-tech electromechanical products and the multi-disciplinary teams it takes to build them well. I've spent the last four years as VP Engineering at Nikon X-Tek Systems, leading seven teams across hardware, software, electronics and systems engineering. Before that I worked as a senior consultant at Cambridge Design Partnership and PDD Innovation, playing leading roles in complex programmes for medical, cleantech and consumer clients. I have a PhD and MSc in robotics in Japan — which gave me both a deep technical foundation and a healthy obsession with elegant, well-reasoned solutions. What motivates me most is a combination of things: solving genuinely interesting engineering challenges, getting great products in people's hands, building cultures where people do their best work, and mentoring engineers who go on to surprise you. I'm tenacious, curious, and I care about getting things right — not just getting them done. Currently open to senior engineering leadership roles where technical depth and people leadership go hand in hand. Book in a chat on https://calendly.com/stefantaal/30min

  • At PA's Technology Group we realize our client's most difficult challenges. I was involved in all stages of what we do: concept development, testing the best ideas in prototypes, building up a new pilot line, as well as the design, build, and commissioning of a full manufacturing line.
  • This has helped Ora, an award-winning, new kitchen towel product to go from idea to store delivery in 12 months. Just another 17 months later, deliveries have started from a full manufacturing line. With several other large FMCG's we were again at the early phases of this journey.
  • Besides several other projects I worked on, I also built up a new universal test rig / robotic platform for fast new process development. Instead of spending weeks on designing and building a test platform, you can now have one up and running in just a few days.
