• As an Engineering Manager for the Site Reliability Team in the Fintech Business Unit at Booking.com, part of Booking Holdings India Pvt Ltd, I was the first member of the team. My role involved establishing the charter, vision , mission and aligning with the SRE Track at Booking.com in Amsterdam, while building a similar structure and practices in India. This required a balanced focus on both Software Engineering and System Engineering for the engineers hired. Within the first three to six months, I expanded the team to four engineers, requesting for more head count, comprising three junior and one senior engineer. Our Bangalore team needed to integrate into the broader SRE organization at Booking.com, which managed various tools, dashboards, and all aspects of maintaining operational continuity. To set a strong precedent, we tackled a challenging problem: setting up tests for Kafka clients. Testing Kafka, designed for resilience and scalability, in a production environment and integrating it into our Capacity Testing tool within the Central UI Platform was complex. We aimed to create targeted tests and successfully developed an MVP, presenting a well-received solution. Today, services continue to be onboarded and integrated with our central Operational Dashboard section for Capacity Testing of systems using the Kafka Messaging System. The proposed method involves using a custom partition assignment strategy based on priority to target specific pods and dynamically increasing the number of consumers on those pods to simulate higher traffic and test capacity. Throughout my time at Booking.com, I met incredible individuals and saw what it meant to say a software engineers view to run Operations. I had the opportunity to learn from great leaders and apply my knowledge to establish standards for system with more that 99.99 % reliability, and foundations for SRE in Bangalore, being the first team to be set up, hire, and understand the local talent market.
