Tony G. — Co-Founder
My expertise in public health spans two decades as a scientist, programmer, program/project manager, and grant writer accomplished in biostatistics; epidemiology; statistical modeling; collaborative surveys; human research IRB protocols; large-scale data management; and HIV prevention/treatment program design. After rewarding years in legal support, I seek to refocus on data science to impact research on vulnerable populations affected by disease. Ever intrigued by the health sciences, I came of age in the late 1980s amid an AIDS crisis ravaging hundreds of thousands, including family and friends even as Hepatitis C lurked largely unnoticed. My grandmother outlived three of her four children with my mother dying from Hepatitis C in 2002 after her siblings Mary, Jenny, and Vincent died—the latter two from AIDS. Their untimely deaths solidified my passion for data-based research and is documented in one of several published writings, “AIDS My Mother’s Family,” anthologized in "Sojourner: Black Gay Voices in the Age of AIDS." After serving as a peer health advocate at Columbia University where I was a pre-med/computer science student, for a decade I worked or volunteered at community-based human/civil rights organization that necessarily changed focus to survival helping not only members but also communities of which they were a part survive AIDS. Acutely I became aware I needed to build my technical capacity to advance in public health as I simultaneously, from 1996-2005, pursued public affairs journalism. I earned an MFA in Nonfiction Writing (The New School, 2001), an MPH in Biostatistics (Columbia, 2004), and served as a research assistant in Columbia's Epidemiology department, after which I became a pro bono peer reviewer of manuscripts for the American Journal of Public Health and consulted at agencies in California and New York. With the latter not paying enough to meet graduate student loan obligations, I began my current financially rewarding skills-building legal support career. In 2023, I seek a return to research/data science via academia or journalism that impacts health policy or public affairs for vulnerable populations. Today, the U.S. battles extant (HIV) and novel (COVID-19) pathogens. American mortality and morbidity rates excessively impact three populations of which I am a part: 1) 70% of COVID deaths affect those 50 and older; 2) 40% living with HIV are Black; and 3) fully 25% living with HIV are Black gay, bisexual, or transgendered men. Thus, I pursue data science anew hoping to identify and share life saving solutions.
