About

The Gool Lodge, which is located in Mirzapur, at the heart of the ‘Old City’ of Ahmedabad (Gujarat, India), was the home and studio of Bachuben Nagarwala, the first professionally trained hair stylist in the city of Ahmedabad. The Conflictorium – Museum of Conflict is housed in the Gool Lodge. The museum has seven experiential galleries on the ground floor, each designed to provoke conversations on conflict, not only out there, but also within. The first floor consists of gallery spaces, residency rooms and a 40-seater auditorium, utilized for events such as exhibitions on various themes, workshops, book readings, cinema screenings and performances, from time-to-time. As a physical space, the Conflictorium facilitates interdisciplinary discourse by bringing together different stakeholders for the cause of peace. As a discursive space, it produces ideas through performances, workshops and exhibitions hosted within its premises; while also providing a medium through which different perspectives come to light, especially for researchers, writers, artists and others actively seeking such a space. Every event contributes to knowledge creation in various forms. A paradigm shift is sought where gaps are very obvious. Many of our efforts are a testament to how dialogue through art practice can bridge differences. Comfortable inequity is broken by recognizing and acknowledging this tug of war between the mainstream and the marginalized, through facilitation of dialogue between them. Since 2013, having hosted over 50,000 visitors in the physical space, we have showcased over 300 events ranging from exhibitions, workshops, book readings and cinema screenings to talks, that reflect this ethos and are currently being archived, on and offline, to be made part of the public domain for greater outreach.
