  • In the capacity of an intern in a project concerning Soliga tribes spread across the Chamrajnagar district of Mysore, I was involved in community mobilization, assisting in monitoring the biomedical sample collection process, understanding the digital health innovations implemented at the PHC level, laise with the district health authorities and institute of public health for a Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA) project. Carrying out data analysis for the SCA project and assisting in field report documentation.
  • Learning outcomes:
  • 1. Skilled at documenting routine field experiences.
  • 2. Understanding the on field challenges involved in collection,transfer of samples within the stipulated time and finding solution which can be put to practice.
  • 3. Granular visibility of community behavior of tribes (Soliga and Jenu Kuruba).
  • 4. Understood how data collection and data collection for action are similar but with a narrow line of demarcation differentiating the two.
  • 5. Learnt how life is closely knit with the concept of 'one health' gained clarity in spread of endemic diseases.
  • 6. Planning field visits, working in tough weather conditions and tapping the untapped are the take home lessons from the internship.
  • I believed in data for research but the course of internship helped me shape my thought to
  • "collect data for coherent actions to reap collated results for sustainable changes".
  • Public health cannot be mastered with books but by spending time with the public. They know the problem and the solution but we as facilitators should help them understand both and aid in solving them.
  • With these learning outlined, I am confident, capable and looking forward for my thesis work to facilitate my future academic interests.
