About

I'm Founder / CEO of Paper2Audio.com, a 100% free site/app for listening to your documents. It supports PDFs, web pages and ePub files. We use AI techniques to accurately narrate documents, including difficult ones like research papers with complex layout and elements, including: tables, figures, 2-column layout, headers/footers, etc. We are on the web, iOS, and Android, plus browser extensions. I listen to research papers (100 full or summarized research papers so far) to simultaneously learn relevant areas of AI and dogfood. I was Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Collage.com, where we made it easy to design and order amazing photo products, such as our best selling photo blankets. We were 100% remote and bootstrapped. I finished my Ph.D. in economics at the University of Michigan 2014. Previously, I was the staff economist at Upwork, the online labor marketplace. I was a summer intern on Google's economics team, then part-time for the next year there. My primary fields of research are: labor economics, e-commerce, marketing and AI. You can find my papers on my Google Scholar: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=ScqB_psAAAAJ&hl=en Before graduate school, I worked as a software developer at Microsoft working on SharePoint for two years. As an undergrad, I double majored in math and economics at the University of Michigan with high honors, high distinction and departmental awards in both subjects, plus I also mainly studied physics, computer science, complex systems and great books. • Paper2Audio is a site / phone app for listening to research papers. We use the latest AI techniques to read your papers to you, including inline summaries of any tables, figures or code blocks. We cut out cruft like page numbers and references. Paper2Audio also can create and read summaries of your papers too. We founded it in late 2024.
  • Older projects:
  • PerfectRec is a personalized recommendation engine powered by human product experts and machine learning. We recommend which electronics to buy, such as smartphones and laptops, helping people find the right product, save time and save money. We pivoted, but you can try our our now outdated product at PerfectRec.com if you're curious.
  • We also started a wiki for products: ProdWiki.com. We built an AI system to write the first draft of articles, to save contributors a ton of time. It didn't take off, so we moved on to Paper2Audio.

Collage.com

Co-Founder and Co-CEO

Nov 2007Apr 2021 · 13 yrs 5 mos · San Francisco Bay Area

  • I co-founded Collage.com, which is the place to go if you want to print photos onto a wide range of products while having a great end-to-end experience. It evolved from a one-off project, to an ongoing hobby, to a side business and then to being my job for about 6 years. We were fairly quirky as both a bootstrapped and remote company from the start. I focused as a leader on promoting a culture of curiosity, collaboration, feedback and debate, global optimization, individual empowerment and fun. We focused a lot on learning about our customers' very specific needs, goals and problems, via a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods. In Q1 2021, our team had about 60 people on it, and we sold the company to PSG, a private equity group, which combined it with Shootproof (Saas software for photographers to manage their business) into the newly formed Foreground, which serves both photo consumers and professionals.
