Self

Least favourite child of my parents

Jan 2004 – Jun 2016 Ā· 12 yrs 5 mos Ā· Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India Ā· On-site

  • I spent my pre-teens and teenage years setting up, running, and often failing at multiple businesses—if you can call them that! Attending boarding school meant I only had one weekend a month at home, so I built and automated ideas to make pocket money. I can say with certainty, this side-quest-streak did not sit well with my parents, so for the longest time, I was the rebel-in-residence.
  • šŸšŸ’°šŸ’”
  • 2004: Developed an invisible ink (nothing new, just age-old formulas). Sold a few ink canisters for $1 each to my very naive 8 year old mates.
  • 2005: Built a hybrid water-fountain/air cooler. Sold 2 units for $50 (both to my grandfather, but hey still counts)
  • 2006: Built a hydro-power mechanism with the help of my physics teacher. Won the "budding scientist" award from a national publication.
  • 2007: Built a prototype 3-axis picking robot and wrote a whitepaper; selected for a Singapore olympiad but was two years too young to participate.
  • 2008: Bought off-the-shelf used vacuum bots and converted it into a SMS-operated version. PCB prototyping, reverse engineering, and sold 1 working bot to my mom (again, counts!)
  • 2009: Launched an affiliate marketing micro-site focused on health and wellness. At the height of the site traffic, I made around $30 a month
  • 2010: Combined the affiliate micro-site with a logo generator micro-site, and launched a full-on proper site. Lost every bit of money I saved before to an online payment scam!
  • 2011-12: Started a Milkshake brand with a cheap milkshake machine from China. At peak, I did 50 shakes a day selling to my school mates. Got told off by the school and the headmaster for selling unauthorised tucks.
  • 2013-14: Screen printed t-shirts packaged inside used tennis ball and badminton cork carton tubes. Sold probably around ~700 tees, and lost $1200 in the process (yikes!)
  • 2015-16: Set up a 3D printing maker-shop to cater to the petrol-heads in my hometown, shipping 500+ units a month and earning $450/month, which funded my Kawasaki Ninja 300.
