About

I thrive when we have to create a compelling new strategy, drive radical transformation, amplify businesses, and/or dramatically accelerate execution. I find it thrilling to create innovative value for our clients, our company, and our team in the midst of change, complexity, and perhaps even chaos. They all play to my core competence which is blending strategic insights, technical acumen, team building, excellent collaboration, and effective communication coupled with meaningful experiences and a proven track record of exceptional business results. I have led many 500+ person organizations, crafted data and AI strategies, transformed traditional software to cloud native SaaS offerings, evolved legacy workflows to ML/AI/cognitive services, incubated new products, changed processes from waterfall to agile, turned around/managed multiple $100M-$700M product portfolios, lived, managed and grown teams in multiple geographies. All this at scale and in the midst of significant corporate transitions – public company going private (athena), private company acquired by a public company (DRG), and integrating acquired companies into a larger entity (numerous). I pride myself on being a perpetual student; while my many academic degrees have enabled a solid foundation, a lot of my learning comes from my colleagues, my clients and life itself. To the extent I can share my learnings and give back, I enjoy mentoring people, speaking at conferences, have written a few articles, and published a handful of papers. I have achieved most of my success by creating a larger sense of purpose for my team/company, striving for alignment, empowering individuals, communicating effectively and developing a culture where innovation can thrive.

  • Frazier Healthcare Partners is a 30 year old Private Equity & Venture Capital firm singularly focused on the healthcare sector.
  • As a Partner for Data & AI at Frazier, I have a dual role. My first one is to seek out investments in healthcare companies that can benefit from our involvement - we are always on the lookout for data rich companies that can accelerate with additional investment.
  • The second one is advising, guiding, coaching and influencing Frazier portfolio companies on Data and AI strategies and helping them with prioritization of tactics to generate the most enterprise value. In that capacity, I am actively working with Comprehensive Pharmacy Services (which has managed hospital pharmacies for 45 years), Parata Systems (Maker of Robotic Pharmacy dispensing systems), Matrix Medical Network (leading clinical services organization for at-risk population), & Dascena (which develops algorithms as predictive biomarkers for complex conditions).

Decision resources group

EVP / Chief Product & Technology Officer

Sep 2019Apr 2020 · 7 mos · Greater Boston Area

  • Decision Resources Group (DRG) [Acquired by Clarivate Analytics] is the premier provider of healthcare analytics, data and insight products and services to the world's leading pharma, biotech and medical technology companies.
  • As EVP/Chief Product and Technology officer, I was responsible for nearly all of the product revenue (90%), and 50% of the employees of the company.
  • This was easily the most impactful job I have had thus far. In the short time, we were able to accelerate the business (double digit growth compared 2% for prior 6 years), create a compelling strategy, simplify the organization, enthrall customers and energize the company. This generated a ton of excitement in the market & exponentially increased our enterprise value.
  • We closed the sale of DRG to Clarivate Analytics for $950M in Feb 2020.

Athenahealth

Vice President - data strategy, analytics and machine learning

Jul 2017Sep 2019 · 2 yrs 2 mos · Greater Boston Area

  • I led athena.intelligence, a division of athenahealth, responsible for all things data and AI, including strategy, product management, engineering and data science.
  • It was incredibly satisfying to create athena’s first data and AI strategy - convincing the board, the executive team and clients, attracting an amazing set of people (from Google, Amazon, IBM etc) to join in the journey & building impactful offerings (reducing physician burnout, complete patient profile) and business results ($20M EBITDA annual savings (est.)).
  • One of the most gratifying accomplishments of the team was in delivering a cloud-based production data lake with over 2 trillion rows of data, 80 billion row daily change, & creating a nimble way to share data in a SaaS model. Another was to create a truly elastic machine learning platform that could deliver predictions from 100+ML models at sub second latency at massive volumes.

Vice President - Watson Machine Learning & Watson Data Platform/Data Gravity & Innovation

Jan 2016Jul 2017 · 1 yr 6 mos

  • I worked with an amazing team of 600+ developers, business analysts and product managers in 14 locations in three areas.
  • The first was in building out a "Machine Learning as a Service" Platform offering that incorporates an array of the best machine (and deep) learning tools and algorithms, packaged in an easy to train & deploy offering, and as importantly, with the ability to re-train and re-deploy rapidly.
  • The second aspect of my job was in building the foundation that is central to all knowledge i.e Data. Building out the "Watson Data Platform" to persist all manner of structured & semi-structured data was exciting. Throw in two very interesting companies (Compose and Cloudant) made it a whole another level of "Cool".
  • The third was driving innovative ways of blending machine learning, open source and data so that we can help clients find the "diamonds in the rough" -- predictably and precisely. A similarly thrilling part of my job was that I was responsible for driving innovation and organically creating unicorn businesses for IBM in the Data & AI space. We incubated a spectrum of cool ideas including innovative ways of driving analytics on blockchain data, virtual reality-based data visualization, a nifty to efficiently run Monte Carlo simulations on the cloud.
