  • All space research organizations across the globe are currently working on active cell balancing of lithium ion cells, which is being utilized in satellites as energy storage devices. ISRO is presently using passive cell balancing methodology, which is proved to have certain limitations, thus to improve their battery efficiency, we are implementing active cell balancing. Batteries exhibit non-uniform characteristics due to their internal physical changes. Sometime battery can be over charged or under charged which could lead to explosion or life span reduction. To overcome this situation equalization of battery charge or battery voltage is required. In this project, an equalization technique is proposed that exposes the individual cell monitoring and fast balancing of cell voltages. This technique is modeled using flyback converter technology and implemented through FPGA and the balancing outputs are produced with series connected 8 Li-Ion Battery cells. Individual cells are continuously monitored and if there is any extra charge in any one the cells then it is detected using the FPGA and then using the flyback topology the extra charge is discharged through the battery so as to maintain constant cell voltage which in turn increases the battery life
