Siro

Work Experience Internship

Nov 2018Nov 2018 · 0 mo · County Dublin, Ireland

  • I visited CommScope to gain an understanding of the equipment that SIRO is using to deploy its GPON in Ireland, learning about the different types, composition and operation of fibre optics for data transmission. I had the opportunity to learn about the importance of equipment such as the ODF, OLT, ONT and splicing machines.
  • I developed an understanding of the different methods of deploying a FTTH network, and why operators choose certain splitting ratios. Furthermore, in the case of SIRO, I learned about how their network connects to the ESB's NTFON and how the positioning of a POP and POI is selected to maximise cost effectiveness and resilience.
  • I visited Keppel's data centre in Blanchardstown to understand how a wholesale network allows retailers to sell their own products at the POI and to visualise the role that the core network plays. Moreover, I had the opportunity to go inside one of SIRO's POPs and actually see the equipment in action.
  • Finally, I learned about IPs role in routing Internet traffic and how SIRO utilises ESB's existing medium to low voltage distribution network to rollout fibre in a way that minimises disruption and maximises QoS.
