About

CTO, entrepreneur, full-stack software developer. I've worked on a wide variety of interesting projects: → I built a company for students and schools around the world to manage applications to universities around the world (www.bridge-u.com). → I built a completely new way for blind people to access the internet (no longer available). → I built a platform for automatically creating photo mosaics from facebook pictures (now offline). → Before quitting my PhD, I worked in a team on software that simulates and visualizes blood flow to the head that runs on 250K computing cores, with the goal of creating a tool to help surgeons make real-time decisions during operations (https://github.com/UCL/hemelb). → I built an adaptive learning platform to learn world geography (now offline but look at this video! It totally paid off: http://youtu.be/nRpIWWnIq_k?t=7m15s) → I've participated on 4 UK quiz-shows, including University Challenge & Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and was a series champion of Only Connect. → I wrote a 17-part tutorial to learn Assembly (http://writing.londonstartuptech.com/fun%20with%20assembly/2015/01/10/fun-with-assembly-1/) → I spent two hours building a site, during the Sochi winter olympics, that would let people automatically add a rainbow overlay to their Twitter profile, in support of LGBT rights (rainbows-for-sochi.herokuapp.com). As well as blog posts, I've written two books. One was about everyday maths that you might have forgotten since school, published in October 2017 as Sodding Sums by Kyle Books. The other, Coding Unlocked, is published by Scholastic and teaches children 2 programming languages & the essentials of computer science in a fun, engaging way.

London startup tech

Consulting Startup CTO

Nov 2012May 2015 · 2 yrs 6 mos · London

  • I consulted to early-stage startups in London to help them get from an idea to a product with paying customers and revenue. For half of them, I built their products, but the common thread between all of them was helping them establish and validate the assumptions behind their business idea. I helped many of them work out who their customers should be, how to market to them, how much to charge, what the value was for the customer and what the product needed to do to solve the customer's problem. I also worked with them to solve typical early-stage problems like making their first hires, and prioritising the 101 things on their todo lists.

  • A friend and I started a company to improve blind people's experience of the Internet. Bootstrapped and later funded by institutional grants, we produced a technically successful product but were unable to commercialise it.
  • Sadly, our old web domain has been taken over by other people to host adult content - nothing to do with us or our company.
