Tamam Abusalama — Communications Manager
I was born and raised in Jabalia Refugee Camp in the Gaza Strip, Occupied Palestine—an experience that has profoundly shaped my identity and aspirations. Growing up in what is often described as the world’s largest open-air prison and enduring multiple aggressions without the means to widely share my story, inspired me to pursue a career in journalism. As a believer in the power of language in all its forms, I chose to study Journalism in Turkish—a language I had not spoken before—at Ankara University in Turkey. After graduating with a high GPA, I moved to Brussels to continue my studies in Communications, focusing on the intersection of new media and society in Europe. This academic path enabled me to dedicate my thesis to analysing how mainstream Western media represents women refugees from so-called “third world countries,” using a post-colonial and intersectional framework. Alongside my studies, I have contributed articles to international news outlets such as Mondoweiss, Electronic Intifada, and We Are Not Numbers. Following my master’s degree, I began my professional journey in communications. Currently, I am ECRE's Senior Communications Officer. I wake up every day with determination and a deep belief that a better world, where justice prevails, is possible.
