At 19, I was in a dilemma - drop out of DTU (Delhi Technological University) to grow my startup or continue with the third semester of my electronics engineering. On one hand, I had gotten into DTU after years of preparation. For the last two years, I had spent 14 hours a day to get what I finally had. I was in one of the finest colleges in India, which meant a high probability of a successful job placement, something I desperately needed. My parents had three kids and could invest in only one’s education. They decided to bet everything on me. They believed I would get a stable job that could bring our family out of financial struggles. On the other hand, I always wanted to build a business, and I finally had one. Throughout my childhood, I saw my father running a business, though a struggling one and I finally had my chance. We were building Finish-it (V1 for quick commerce) and growing 50% MOM. Remind you, this was 2017.... and startups weren’t cool yet, and Q-com didn’t exist. This was a lifetime chance. Should I listen to my heart or my brain? Until now, all my life decisions were made for me. For the first time, I had to chose what to do with my life. I decided to listen to my heart, gave myself three years. I dropped out and started building it. For the next 24 months, it was a dream run. We grew fast, raised funds, and received so much love from our customers. But, truth be told, we weren’t making money. In fact, we were losing it on most orders. To build an efficient system, we needed money, a lot of it. The timing also wasn’t right. So, we finally decided to shut shop. Eventually, I had 0 money remaining in my bank account and thus eventually, I decided to take up a job. For the next 5 years, I prepared myself to take just one more bet. Like making money to fund the company, learning about growth and business, building myself as a good problem identifier, startegist and executioner. Now finally, I made money, have invested in my brothers education, sent both of them abroad, saved few to take one more try at a startup.
