iSpirt Volunteer- Health Care

Mar 2019Dec 2025 · 6 yrs 9 mos · Greater Bengaluru Area

  • In my spare time, I have been volunteering at iSpirt - a technology policy organization to help with certain aspects of the National Health Stack. I realized technology was what I understood best and iSpirt was a place where I could bring together my passion for technology and helping build nation scale infrastructure that could genuinely help people on something very fundamental.

  • Built a strong research team, and worked on network function virtualization, specifically focussed on virtualizing cellular base station signal processing. Virtualizing Physical layer processing is one of the hardest challenges since it is significantly compute heavy (specifically processes like turbo decoding) and has real time constraints (3ms in LTE). We designed virtualization and scheduling mechanisms to do share processing. We prototyped our system and demonstrated the feasibility on general purpose hardware.

  • Conceptualized and executed cutting edge research projects on next generation wireless network systems with colleagues. In particular on designing wireless networks over TV whitespaces. Television spectrum occupies the lower frequency ranges which have great propagation characteristics and is hence very valuable real estate for spectrum. However this end of the spectrum is not available uniformly and depends on the channel occupied in specific regions. We designed protocols and mechanisms to ensure that this rich real estate could be occupied with WiFi like protocols and designed intellgient spectrum sharing algorithms. Published some good papers, and prototypes. A great article in IEEE Spectrum summarizing our work:

Member of Technical Staff

Dec 2007Dec 2009 · 2 yrs

  • Worked on designing and building low cost road traffic sensing solutions (early IoT). Found that traffic sensing solutions were expensive (order of $50K a mile then), expensive to lay and maintain.
  • Designed a low cost (under $500 a mile) solution based on Bluetooth sensing which could be used to monitor and manage traffic in urban scenarios, amenable especially for countries like India. Transferred it to the ITS vertical as a product.

  • Started a variety of research projects on next generation wireless networking and applications:
  • (i) Worked on Mobile robotic sensor networks, using robots and sensing to help with scenarios like disaster recovery.
  • (ii) Worked on an early IoT project to help with search in the physical world, using a combination of sensor and search technology to find things instead of data.
  • (iii) Worked on PeopleNet, showed random interactions with natural mobility of people could be used to communicate messages over large distances. We showed that this technology could also be used to build contact tracing applications in pandemic situations. Built one of the first bluetooth based phone contact tracing applications in 2004 during SARS.
  • Advised 3 fantastic PhD students, and several undergrad and Master's students.
