• My PhD was part of the European project "Integrated biotechnological solutions to combat marine oil spills" (Kill ● Spill), in which innovative biotechnologies have been developed for use in actions aimed at the cleaning of oil spills in marine environments . In the framework of this project adequate tools have been developed for the first response, the monitoring and the long-term actions. Within this project different tools have been developed to monitor bioremediation of contaminated areas. These tools include chemical methods for detecting degradation products, metagenomic analysis to detect strains and proteomic ones for monitoring degradative activities, as well as the construction of biosensors for the rapid detection of aromatic hydrocarbons. The work of my thesis focused precisely on the construction of different biosensors to detect aromatic hydrocarbons.
