Haryana vision zero

Co-creator

May 2017Mar 2020 · 2 yrs 10 mos · Haryana, India

  • Inspired by the Swedish Vision Zero road safety initiative (also copied by New York City and others), we created the Haryana Vision Zero (HVZ) program as a collaboration between NASSCOM, WRI and the government of Haryana. Nagarro and Honda Moto Corp were the initial sponsors. Vision Zero aims to achieve the ideal of ZERO deaths in road accidents, holding that all such deaths are preventable. Human error cannot be held responsible, the responsibility must lie with the design of the system. HVZ involves road safety experts deployed one to each district, who work closely with police and transport/municipal/road authorities to reach the site of each fatal accident, identify the root cause, and make structural and systemic changes to eliminate that cause. HVZ has been credited with saving hundreds of lives and Haryana's efforts were praised even by the Supreme Court.
