About

The way to change the world is to change the way people perceive the world. The ability of geospatial technology to change peoples' perceptions is extremely powerful. My interests lie at the intersection of geospatial literacy, technology and the application of that knowledge to solve -not just study- the complex challenges society faces today. I am the Technical Communications Lead at Development Seed, an impact-driven geospatial software development team. This means that I know a little about a lot of things. I'm good at talking about geospatial tech and love experimenting with and testing out things that other people build. I care a lot about data literacy, all things open - data, science, tools, and using our powers for good. I love talking with non-technical people and helping them figure out how to apply geospatial data and tools to their work or research. Jul 2019May 2022 · 2 yrs 10 mos · Tucson, Arizona Area

  • I manage the Geographic Information Systems & Geospatial Science program with the University of Arizona Libraries' Data Cooperative Unit.
  • As part of the Data Cooperative unit at UA Libraries, our goal is to support a data literate campus. In the geospatial program I do this through workshops & training that I develop for the Library as well as through building of partnerships and collaborations with others in the Library and across campus who are also interested in building data literacy and capacity in students. As someone with a background in private and public sector I am interested in using real world, applied and experiential approaches to teaching GIS and working with spatial data.
  • One of the ways that I promote data literacy on campus is to bring expertise and experiences to campus. The goal is to expose students to ways in which they might use skills such as GIS, data science, data visualization in their future professional or career fields. In April 2022, OpenStreetMap US is hosting their national conference State of the Map US at the University of Arizona after a successful bid I submitted in 2019 (conference was delayed due to COVID).
  • Each year I organize and host a campus-wide GIS Day as an opportunity to bring GIS users and practitioners from across disciplines together to share their research and achievements. These events are well-attended and we were able to continue them virtually during COVID.
