D Murali ☆ — Product Engineer
A journalist based in Chennai, I’m also Editor of Business Advisor (in the Magzter portal, founded by Indians with HQ in NY). A Chartered Accountant by professional qualification (1984, May-CA Inter-All-India Rank 1; 1985, Nov-CA Final-Rank 6), I worked for alma mater, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (1988-1996), HQ New Delhi, as Computer Faculty and EDP-in-charge (after a brief stint with a private firm, followed by a short spell of trying my hand at practising). We were using floppy disks for booting up the PCs to MS-DOS 3.2, back then. It was fun using BASICA and Lotus macros; I created self-help tutorials, tests, and a few games, running on floppies for students (who included senior CAs learning PC use). I also wrote for the Chartered Accountant journal (monthly), technology-related columns such as Dbase Matters and Lotus Matters, introducing readers to computer applications through real-life situations described chattily and wittily. During my Delhi days, I wrote a puzzle book for the Children’s Book Trust, and a CA-Inter syllabus-oriented book on the fundamentals of EDP.Thereafter, I worked in the Hindu Business Line financial newspaper, Chennai, as Chief Research Analyst, and Deputy Editor, managing the Accountancy, Taxation, and Mentor pages, apart from contributing book reviews, interviews, articles and news reports for other pages and features such as eWorld, BrandLine and Variety (1996-2012). Some of the popular columns that I then wrote include: AccountSpeak, Globe Trot, Detaxification, Zero Base, ByteBanter, E-Dimension, Number Crunch, Just Do IT, Swati CA, Books2Byte, Investment Illustrated, Say Cheek, and Sticklish Issues. Generally, what I look for, as a journalist, is thought leadership among entrepreneurs, authors, and domain experts, across industry verticals. And I tried to highlight their insights in my posts, writings and interviews, when working for media houses. For this purpose, my preference was for face-to-face interactions, documented through video clips that I uploaded to my YouTube channels. As an independent journalist, till the pandemic onset, I attended press conferences and media events, live streaming the proceedings, much to the chagrin of print journalists who felt that the whole story was out before they could break it. These days, I spend time at my desk, creating self-study videos (check @SanskritTweets on X), prodding AI (with satirical chats), and also generally staying away from field reporting, mobile phone, Whatsapp, TV News and OTT, preferring instead long walks in Mylapore, with my wife.
