About

I love to work in Go, JavaScript and Python, but I'm happy to use whatever tool is most suited for the job at hand. My two favorite daily activities are learning and teaching within my team, and listening to Vampire Weekend while I jam out some code. I've recently been on a Rust/Zig kick, doing some stuff on the side when I have time. I'm also interested in the marriage of the SSR/SPA world, and how we can build client-first webapps that still have certain pages that prerender immediately for SEO purposes.

Experience

Laltal

Head Of Engineering

Jul 2021Jan 2022 · 6 mos · Salt Lake City Metropolitan Area

  • I led a team of developers as we built a gamified 1-to-1 education app in React Native, TypeScript, and Go. LalTal was a seed-stage startup with only 10 people in the company, and I had a blast working directly with the amazing cofounders and being their primary interface between product direction and engineering execution. We deployed some amazing solutions including:
  • Real-time messaging using native websockets in Go
  • High-scale audio streaming infrastructure
  • CI/CD pipelines that allowed us to iterate and rapidly test new product hypotheses based on user conversations
  • I ended up leaving after we struggled to find product-market-fit, but I have nothing but respect for everyone I worked with, and I'm proud of the the engineering team I helped build while there. I believe that the founders will almost certainly have amazing success in the next iteration of the product.

  • I built Boot.dev Boot.dev because I believe the smartest way to master backend development by tackling the hardest problem with e-learning: boredom. Our platform uses tactics learned from modern game design to push ambitious students toward their goal: a career in backend development. Through hands-on lessons that balance theory with practice, and an active Discord community, students are prepared to tackle technical interviews and forge a successful programming career.
