Karen Woodin-Rodríguez, UX Career Coach — Co-Founder
The last 3 years have been brutal for UX Designers looking for jobs. I should know: I’ve been coaching them for 6 years. When I started coaching in 2020, it was a job-seekers’ market and it was easy. And then 2023 rolled around and everything changed. What would once take AT MOST 6 months was now taking AT LEAST 12 months. I felt frustrated and disheartened. I burned out TWICE. But I wanted to figure out a way to help UX Designers succeed. So I spent hours connecting with UX recruiters, analyzing what they were looking for, studying UX resumes to learn how to best quantify impact, and studying portfolio reviews to understand what would yield candidates results. Then one day, when I was feeling particularly low, I took a step back and had a realization that changed everything: 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀. 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘆𝗽𝘀𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀. I realized I got sucked into the belief that you can’t get a UX job in this market. And that wasn’t helping me or anyone. I decided then and there to change the story. So instead of responding to the whims of the market, and letting another news about layoffs deflate me, I decided to slow down to speed up, and take UX Designers through a proven system to go from Invisible to UNmissable. I was committed to helping designers become fireproof. Anyone can get a job when the market is easy, but only those who play an entirely different game can land life-changing roles in any economy. You can cut corners when the market is great and still get results. But when the market is fierce like it’s been, you must be GREAT at the fundamentals. It worked. My clients started landing interviews again. While others complained about the market, my clients got interviews and landed roles at consulting firms, startups, and established businesses. What I’m most proud of is that they KNEW it would happen and they weren’t stressing about the timeline. They just kept showing up, doing the work, fully knowing that their success was inevitable. Today, I help UX designers with 5+ years of experience get clarity for their next role, own their positioning, and get enviable opportunities that are not advertised.
