About

As a former manager of the Web Standards Project, Aaron Gustafson has spent nearly three decades working to make the web more equitable, inclusive, and resilient. A seasoned designer, developer, and consultant, Aaron has collaborated with many companies you’ve likely heard of. In 2015, he joined Microsoft as a web standards advocate, partnering closely with the Edge browser team. There, he founded the developer-engagement initiative The Web We Want and helped shape the future of Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) as a member of the W3C’s Web Applications Working Groups—editing specifications and authoring numerous feature proposals. In 2022, Aaron shifted his focus to accessibility innovation, taking the helm of Microsoft’s AI for Accessibility grant program to identify and fund breakthrough solutions worldwide. Today, he continues to lead accessibility efforts at Microsoft, driving AI-powered projects that empower people with disabilities and improve developer tooling. He also advises other organizations on integrating accessibility into their development processes and elevating the quality—and equality—of their AI-connected products. Aaron is a prolific writer and educator. His three-part series on progressive enhancement for A List Apart remains a perennial favorite, and his seminal book Adaptive Web Design has earned widespread acclaim. When not writing, Aaron speaks at conferences and leads workshops around the globe.
