Matthew J. McCullough — VP of Engineering
I’m a product leader with a 25-year track record in software development. I got my start building and shipping two commercially successful desktop apps before high school, and I've been creating products ever since. Today, as VP of Product, Android Developer Experience at Google, my passion is leading teams that shape the future of mobile development for millions of developers worldwide. I'm focused on defining the Android ecosystem and empowering developers with the tools, APIs, and frameworks they need to innovate. This work includes evolving the Android developer experience, from core tools like Android Studio to the Kotlin programming language and AI integration. Throughout my career, I’ve applied my passion for distributed collaboration and open source to every challenge. My journey has taken me from building profitable desktop, server, and web solutions for clients to senior leadership roles at GitHub, the most well-known developer company in the world. As both Senior Vice President of Product and VP of Go-to-Market & Field Services there, my focus was on taking GitHub’s products to market and ensuring customer success. I've always been a strong proponent of and contributor to open-source projects, and I've found a lot of success applying agile methodologies and even marketing techniques to software development. Beyond my day-to-day work, I’ve been a voice in the software community, having delivered many hundreds of presentations at conferences like No Fluff Just Stuff, JavaZone, JFokus, JavaOne, and Devnexus. I also built and delivered presentation skills workshops for small consultancies up to multiple Fortune 500 companies. I’m a contributing author to several O’Reilly books, including Version Control with Git and Jenkins: The Definitive Guide, and also the Addison-Wesley book, Presentation Patterns. I'm the creator of the Git Master Class video series and have contributed to the crafting of the Java Community Process (JCP) exam. I’ve also had the privilege of helping shape the developer community directly by serving on the Denver JBoss User Group Board of Directors and as a past President of the Denver Open Source Users Group.
