About

I'm a software engineer with 10+ years of experience in the area of developer tools and IDEs. I love building strong teams and mentoring people. I'm currently a Sr. Staff Engineer at Databricks and responsible for customer-facing developer tools such as IDEs, Infrastructure as Code, SDKs, and CLIs. As a tech lead, I helped set up the team from scratch, grow the team and set product and technical direction. Previously I was a Principal Engineer at AWS and my area of responsibility covered the AWS Cloud9, AWS CloudShell, and AWS Toolkits services and the engineering teams building and maintaining these services. I joined Amazon after Cloud9 was acquired by AWS. Before joining Amazon I was co-founder and Chief Architect of Cloud9 IDE and creator of the ACE code editor. I'm a DevOps generalist and TypeScript, node.js, and web technologies specialist. I have released products at Databricks and launched two AWS services and have strong experience in building secure, maintainable, and operationally excellent services in the Cloud. I started my career by pushing the boundaries of the web. Bringing new experiences and new types of applications to the web. At Cloud9 we are building a complete IDE running in the browser using nothing but JavaScript and HTML5. For a great IDE experience, the code editor is a very critical component. Therefore one of my first tasks for Cloud9 was to build an HTML-based code editor component that compares well with editors like Sublime Text or TextMate. The result was ACE which has become the most popular online code editor with more than 26000 "likes" on GitHub. While becoming more and more responsible for the Cloud9 backend I came to love the challenges of designing for scale.

  • As chief architect I am responsible for the overall application architecture across the full stack of Cloud9. My main responsibility is to make sure that the platform remains secure, reliable and scalable as the Cloud9 user base grows.
  • Cloud9 runs on top of Google Compute Engine (GCE), where we use data centers in multiple regions to achieve low latency for the user and resilience to individual data center outages. Every service is redundant in multiple data centers and can be scaled horizontally to increase capacity.
  • Together with our CTO Lennart Kats I have implemented our docker based hosting backend for Cloud9 workspaces. Today we run application code of Cloud9 users in several 10.000 docker containers every day, achieving a great performance for our users and a high density of workspaces on our servers.
  • I'm leading a cross functional team of operations and software engineers, which monitors and runs Cloud9 in production and is constantly improving the security, reliability and scalability of the platform.

  • Cloud9 IDE is a full featured IDE running completely in the browser. I was part of the development team from the beginning. I have worked on all ares of Cloud9 from frontend to the node.js backend. From integration with third partys like Github to a remote node.js debugger running in the browser. Scaling it from a simple server running on a single Linux box to a fully scalable farm of services running on Amazon Web Services.
  • My most prominent contribution to Cloud9 is certainly the ACE code editor, which has become the most popular open source online code editor with more than 24000 "likes" on GitHub.
  • Another area of work was the workspace hosting and sandboxing. First on Solaris then on Red Hat's OpenShift PaaS platform and finally on docker.
