About

My mission at Google is to make the web lower friction for users, less frustrating for developers and more open for society. I am one of the overall technical leads of Google Chrome and the Chromium open source project. I am also working on advancing web APIs for identity and payments with a goal of making the web safer for users and more profitable for all web-based businesses. Efforts I've designed and helped to lead include making the whole web faster (and more profitable) with the Core Web Vitals project, and making the web behave more consistently across browsers (WPT/Interop). Follow me on BlueSky as @rbyers.net and on X as @RickByers. I am also on the Google Waterloo site leadership team. I'm always on the lookout for exceptional technical leaders who are driven for positive global impact while making Canada their home. In my free time I am a molecular biology hobbyist and enjoy learning about the cold viruses flowing through my house from my basement PCR/sequencing lab.

  • I'm working on making the web lower friction and safer for users, less frustrating for developers, more profitable for businesses, and more open for society. Currently my biggest area of focus is on web transaction flows (identity and payments), enabling them to be lower friction, more secure and private, all while supporting an open interoperable ecosystem. In addition I am one of Chrome's three Area Tech Leads with technical responsibility across Chrome and the Chromium open source project.
