I have been in the embedded systems business for almost 50 years. My main mission, today, is to help OEMs to create secure IoT devices and secure embedded devices through firmware partitioning. I believe that firmware partitioning is a practical approach for improving the security of devices and that it has many additional benefits. I have 9 patents and have written many articles on RTOSs and on device security.

I and a partner founded Micro Digital in 1975 as one of the first microprocessor design companies. Our first project was based upon an 8-bit 8080 with a 2 MHz clock rate, 16 KB of EPROM memory, and 4 KB of RAM. The 8080 chip had only 6,000 transistors. Assembly language programming was done via a model 33 ASR Teletype connected to a timesharing service. Debugging was done using EPROMs.
By 1989, I had tired of designing products for other companies and decided to do my own product, a real-time multitasking kernel called smx. Over the years, smx grew into the SMX RTOS with substantial middleware and support for a large number of processors. Recently I have been the architect and primary developer of SecureSMX.
