About

When I first started managing software engineers — twenty years ago — I was terrible at it. I was working at a daily newspaper, building social networks for dogs and moms in the early aughts, and my boss left for another gig. I jumped at the promotion and found myself managing a team of six with zero clue what I was doing. I couldn't juggle my own output while guiding the team. I didn't know what to delegate. I didn't realize I was setting an example, or that people needed context to do their jobs well. Over the next two decades, I bounced between individual contributor and management roles across startups, agencies, and SaaS companies. Each time I got a little better at it - mostly through scar tissue and hard-won lessons. But the thing that stuck with me most was that newsroom. Deadlines that don't move. Editions that have to ship. A workflow built around the assumption that chaos is the default and your job is to ship anyway. That's what I do now. I run Axiomatic, where I help B2B SaaS companies fix broken delivery through embedded transformation work, fractional CTO engagements, and 1:1 coaching for engineering leaders making the jump from IC to manager. The methodology I use - Editorial - comes directly from that newspaper background, and it's built around a simple idea: code is commodity, judgment is scarce, and deadlines matter.

  • I managed a team of three to four engineers supporting both The Artist Formerly Known as Sigstr as well as new initiatives for Terminus. I helped guide the team through the acquisition, while trying to meld the best parts of Sigstr's engineering culture with that of the new team. In this time, I also helped Terminus identify improvements in engineering onboarding, remote processes and culture, and software development lifecycle.

  • I managed the engineering team at Sigstr during this time - with eight to ten in-house engineers plus another dozen offshore contract resources. During this time, I helped define the engineering culture - from how we develop software (with an emphasis on delivery speed with safety) to how we hire developers and find talent to how we work to develop product. During this period, we launched an entirely new product line with new system design, new architecture and new core technologies suited to the purpose.
  • I also helped lead the team to Soc II, Type 2 certification and helped define and implement our GDPR compliance.
  • Ultimately, I also helped Sigstr exit into an acquisition by Terminus - participating in due diligence operations.

Senior Software Engineer

  • Among the things I was responsible for in this role:
  • I created and build the core integration framework. This framework allowed us to quickly deliver new integrations to market and helped drive the company to 4x revenue in roughly two years.
  • I developed our core scheduled campaign type, introducing my fair share of time-zone-related bugs to the system that I debugged over the years.
  • I developed our Mac Outlook software agent - an unholy amalgamation of Ruby, Applescript, bash, and sqlite that could read the internals of Outlook to find email addresses and then pull a signature from our app and stick into Outlook. This software remains in use across many customers and thousands of customer computers to this day.
