  • As one of five lead developers on the WordPress open source project, currently spanning 65% of known CMS usage or 42% of all websites, I take a lot of pride in iterating on user-facing software at scale and shepherding a global cross-disciplinary team. My responsibilities over the years have included driving engineering execution on feature and tool development; major architectural decisions; mentorship, coaching, and advocacy for fellow contributors; nurturing cross-project relationships; code review; issue and discussion management; writing guides and specifications; peer feedback; managing release cycles; and writing code across many components and languages myself.

Director, Open Source Initiatives

Aug 2011Dec 2021 · 10 yrs 4 mos

  • I work closely with our founder to identify opportunities for contributing to the open source that makes our business possible, including leading the identification, strategy, UX, and engineering of transforming one-off client solutions into well-maintained open source projects. As a Director within the Engineering discipline, I translate higher level initiatives into priorities, roadmaps, and discrete engineering tasks, along with managing and coaching our Open Source Engineers. I interface with hundreds of individual contributors, both internal and external, and frequently speak at industry events. Our contributions to the OSS ecosystem include underwriting a significant amount of developer, designer, and project management time for the WordPress open source project; providing high-quality open source solutions in the WordPress and web development spaces; and speaking at and sponsoring events.
  • As the first full-time employee at a fully-remote company, I also spend some of my time continuing to oversee our internal communication tools that I originally implemented, including our internal blog, Slack instance, and various integrations relating to the two. I have been a part of the senior leadership team since its inception in 2013, and as a highly visible member of the company, have been an integral part of its growth to almost 300 employees in 10 years.

Web Developer

Oct 2008Oct 2011 · 3 yrs

  • The Eastman School of Music is considered to be one of the top music conservatories in the world, and I am proud to both be an alum and a former staff member. I was the project lead and technical architect for the implementation of WordPress as the main CMS for our website, which led directly to my participation in WordPress as an open source software project. Prior to that, I was tasked with building and maintaining custom PHP/MySQL applications in support of various offices and departments, including a collaboration with the Institute for Music Leadership to replace an aging paper-based Gig Service with a dynamic web application. I also coordinated with the Director of Web Services and Eastman faculty, staff, and administration to design and develop web content and applications for internal and external use, and ensured that all aspects of Eastman websites met current web standards, ADA regulations, and University of Rochester policy.
  • In addition to my responsibilities building and maintaining Eastman web properties, I taught Digital Portfolio Creation and Web Site Construction courses tailored specifically for musicians, trained and supported other web content creators at the school, and established our social media presences in collaboration with the Communications office.
