Palash Kulshreshtha — Engineering Manager
Been working with paytm since 2015 . I've seen 4 phases 1. Initial development 2015-to late 2016 - Start up phase - in this phase we were building initial systems in paytm marketplace. Unaware of the challenges that lie ahead. 2. Demonitization 2017 to late 2018- Challenger phase - Our systems were tested by demonitization's kisses of death. Though we had designed systems with scalability in mind. But it challenged us more to think in terms of flexibility to future changes as well. 3. Maturity phase 2019 - 2021 - almost maturity- We transitioned from initial startup culture to more process oriented organization. There were waves of changes that happened in the organization. This is inevitable phase in growth story. 4. Going public phase- 2021-2022 - The aim at the time of going public means different priorities. Market and regulators can crackdown on companies on the issues of downtime and security lapses. So we lead a thorough review under amazon well architected review of our 30 something services spanning over 500 servers and 12 different domain names including the main paytm.com. 5. Cost cutting phase - 2023 - finding various ways to cut cost at people and infra front. After going through all these stages, I got a great perspective of restrospecting the tech and non tech decisions we took few years back. They were according to situations back then but today they require new approach. On personal front 2015 - started as individual contributer on software engineer level. Coding the requirements put forward by seniors 2016 - started actively reviewing code pushed by other engineers in the team 2017 - started coordinating with product teams and business teams for understanding end user requirements and designing systems from ground up. Designed GST for paytm merchants in team of 3 2018 - started tracking projects and architectural designs and actively contributing to enhancing designs put forward by team members 2020 - started leading full charters along with guiding team members to completion of those 2021 - learning to remove roadblocks faced by team to improve team's output and efficiency Present- enabling team members to completion of goals by reviewing, discussing, troubleshooting and guiding on both technical and non technical challenges. 2022 - understanding nuances of managerial world from leaders at paytm in various meetings as silent observer. 2023 - attended more than 30-40 rca discussion of major outages to understand and drill down their rootcause so that we dont repeat the same mistakes as a company. 2024- missed writing it.
