  • Co-founded the agency. We were a small shop working on many types of projects from the early days of responsive web to experiential rooms for science centers and art galleries. I did a bit of everything over the years—responsible for leading our design and technology efforts, managing and contributing on projects, and pitching new business.
  • Our focus early on was branding for small businesses and non-profits. We grew to become one of the top agencies in Northern Ontario, eventually pivoting into a digital boutique with agency-of-record contracts with Science North, the Art Gallery of Sudbury, Musagetes Foundation, ecommerce for legendary punk record label Deranged Records and helped kickstart Manitoulin Brewing Company. We decided to sunset the company for the opportunity to move to California and sharpen our product design skills.
  • Highlights:
  • $500K/yr annual revenue - Agency of Record contracts (for a team of 2, this was pretty huge!)
  • Northern Ontario Business' Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award
  • So(cial) Good Design Award
  • Design Edge's Legacy Award

Independent Designer

  • After graduating from design school, the recession was on its way and jobs were sparse. There was work to be done but very few open roles. I started a "studio" out of my apartment called Small Change with a friend (named after the Tom Waits song) and designed posters, album art, skate decks, etc. The irony in the name didn't strike us at the time.
  • Later, I freelanced for agencies, notably Overtheatlantic and 50 Carleton (yes, there is a design industry north of Toronto). My first project with OTA won a Canadian Marketing Award, and at 50C, I worked on telecomm campaigns for Bell and on mining projects for Sandvik. Classic agency work. Having the freedom to work with agencies while maintaining my autonomy is where my interest in entrepreneurship started.

Concert Promoter

Jul 2005Jan 2015 · 9 yrs 6 mos · Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

  • I was the sole all ages punk and metal booker in Sudbury, Ontario providing a pit stop between Thunder Bay and Toronto. Booked hundreds of bands over nearly a decade from heavy metal juggernauts like Architects, Every Time I Die and Madball, to punk classics like Regulations and Career Suicide. Even dipped my feet into the world of folk music with artists like Julie Doiron and Daniel Romano. I almost booked M.O.P. once but they got stuck at the border. I did book Shad, though (Hip-Hop Evolution host).
  • I really didn't want a "job" job. By focusing on music and cultivating a community, I was able to sharpen my design skills making posters, album art, etc. and even ran an online message board, Punksud.com, with hundreds of daily active users.

  • If you've made it this far into my profile, thanks for sticking with me. Fun fact: my childhood dream was to become a professional hockey player. I put this here mostly as a joke... but hey, we all need a backup plan, right? The dream is still alive. Hope it gave you a laugh.
