About

If you have a data problem, it is highly likely I can help you! I have a core computer science background from undergrad and ended up at an early-stage startup in the data space out of curiosity. We were 5 full-time folks then. This is where I spent the next 6 years and helped setup and lead the building of the data infrastructure at the company and more Naturally, as a member of the founding team, there was a lot of ownership to take and lessons to be learnt all across the data stack - people, process and tools I love problem solving and system design and meaningful automation to get real value out of data Outside of tech and data I have closely mentored many people which is another thing I intrinsically enjoy Not a fan of job titles :)

Health and well-being

Jul 2021Nov 2022 · 1 yr 4 mos

  • The phase of the second wave in India of the Covid pandemic ended up being the stimuli that opened the pandora's box that to my surprise at that point my mind and body was not ready to handle and I realized it was time to slow down and examine
  • I like the concept of antifragility
  • Looking forward to a more whole version of myself
  • Update: February 2023
  • Taking a break was the best thing to do at that point. I was bored and tired
  • By the end of 2022 it seemed like the reset was complete
  • Back in the game now! Lets play

Atlan

Principal Engineer

Jan 2018Jul 2021 · 3 yrs 6 mos · Remote

  • Started and led the data platform engineering team
  • I look at it as a continuation of the journey from SocialCops even though the companies are very different
  • Atlan is a modern data workspace which aims to enable better collaboration between a diverse set of users from stewards to analytics and engineers — to help cater higher efficiency and agility in data projects.
  • With the platform now providing absolute control of workflows in the hands of the user and users being outside our own data team - this was a journey of developing and managing the data infrastructure running complex data pipelines and auto-tuning query clusters and self-pruning data lakes and later on problems around active metadata like the quality of the data catalog and the dirty problem of cross tool data lineage
  • It was fun!

Socialcops

Founding Engineer

Jun 2015Jan 2018 · 2 yrs 7 mos · New Delhi, Delhi, India

  • Love for startups and cool problems led me here after my undergrad
  • We built a lot of nifty data tooling to help the in-house data team deliver projects such as the National Data Platform, powered monitoring for UN SDGs, the Ujjwala program in India and several other projects with the UN, World Bank, Tata Trusts and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
  • Led the effort on Camelot, a PDF parsing library we open sourced in 2018
  • It trended on Github and HackerNews globally for a week, shot to 3000+ stars on Github (not the right metric to evaluate an OSS effort) but it clearly validated the core use case
  • Back then, the term "data engineering" was barely a part of the zeitgeist although as I write this in 2022, most of the work we did would fit under that umbrella
  • Insight and experience from this time led to the birth of Atlan down the road!
