  • "Doers do and others teach". Shame on us!
  • If doers keep doing who will teach you what doers really do, how they do it, why they do what they do, when to do what and when not to... The nuances of product making are important. Every problem is unique and the challenges are very different. If you cannot cherish every aspect of product making from the eyes of a doer you will miss a big part.
  • Xperian School is my attempt to show you real-world problem solving through a practitioner's lens. After crafting 160+ products, 80K pixel-perfect screens, 50+ design systems, 100+ clientele (really smart ones), it is hard to keep quiet with so much BS going around in the design and product world. I can't clean up the whole world. At least I can teach 50 students a year and transform them inside out.
  • While I am not a big fan of online education, for various other reasons we will have a simple platform where passionate practitioners share their love for product making. You will get real-world advisory from the doers. We will have awesome teachers helping doers teach better, this way they don't screw your learning experience.
  • I will continue to DO so that I can continue to TEACH better. The school is there to help you blossom from within so that we make an alchemist out of you and not just another designer / product maker.

  • Journey: Product making experience in HP (2006-2011) left a deep impact of transforming lives of customers through design thinking and execution. Was inspired to do the same for several products.
  • Followed the design process of Discovery -> Insights -> Imperatives -> Concepts -> Execution (Information, Interaction, Interface/Visual Design) for all clients irrespective of the size and needs. Work collaboratively with the core team and get things done faster. We stayed more in clients office than in our studio.
  • Learnings:
  • 1. Not all products need the full design cycle. We can start anywhere and still add a lot of value to the user.
  • 2. Shipping faster is key.
  • 3. Increase efficiency and effectiveness & fail faster.
  • 4. MVP is better than a full blown application design. However think design scalability at all times. It will reduce design and dev efforts.
  • 5. Don't send emails, send Demos.
  • 6. Don't write documents, make prototypes.
  • 7. Use the right tools for the right job (Sucker for Sketch & Just In Mind)
  • 8. Convert Insights into a design and tell a compelling story so that business can pay heed.
  • 9. Show Hero products and Competition to tickle the thinking of the team.
  • 10. Evangelise design and add your bit to the design culture.
  • Now we have married product management and design thinking and helping our clients with all aspects of making a product successful.

By now we were not just making printers but making printing solutions.Our innovations penetrated customer's lives so deeply that, they effortlessly printed sudoko, daily news to air tickets without lifting the little finger.

  • Real Work: Experience Mapping. User Studies (formative and generative). UI Strategy. User Interface Design. Globalizations & Localizations. UxQA. Design Communication to Leadership & Standardizing Design Language across the series.
  • All the above is not possible single handedly and my awesome talented team helped HP deliver great user experience in their printers to the world and making competition run to make changes to their printers as well. Following HP, Epson, Lexmark, Canon and everyone else changed their UI to Touch screens and that made us a proud team for making a scratch in the printing world through Design. That was a big deal in 2006 - 2009 compared to today.
