Gcobani Qambela — Co-Founder
I am a multi-award-winning distinguished educator and Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Development Studies at the University of Johannesburg. I am the former President of the Anthropology Southern Africa Association (ASnA) (2022-2023) and an elected Organising Committee Member of the World Council of Anthropological Associations (WCAA) (2023). In 2021, I co-authored a widely used workbook on “Anti-Racist Teaching Practices and Learning Strategies”. My knowledge and expertise in anthropology is extensively recognised in my local context in Southern Africa, and in many parts of the world. I carry wide-ranging experience having worked in corporate consultancy (e.g. Netflix, Nahana Communications Group), the NGO sector (e.g. the Centre for AIDS Development Research and Evaluation) as well as consulting for a number of international organisations (e.g. MSF/Doctors Without Borders, Amnesty International), schools (e.g. Uplift North Hills, St Andrew’s School for Girls), universities (e.g. University of Pretoria, University of Kwa-Zulu Natal) and governments (South African and the United States of America government through USAID). In the past years, I have built up a strong teaching portfolio with a number of universities and organisations in various fields including critical medical anthropology, global health, earth sciences, as well as cultural anthropology. In this process, I have had the opportunity to teach with South African (University of Johannesburg, Rhodes University and North West University), American (Florida International University, Duke University and Organisation for Tropical Studies) and Canadian institutions (Quest University). I have experience teaching first, second, third, honours and mixed classes that include Masters students and working professionals (e.g. through ACCESS/the Applied Centre for Climate and Earth Systems Sciences). I have had the opportunity to supervise to completion the research project work of senior undergraduate students, and postgraduate students up to PhD level. In addition to teaching, I have worked on a number of multi-and-interdisciplinary research projects including for Princeton University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and others. The research work has allowed me the opportunity to hone my skills in qualitative research and increasingly quantitative research. My publication portfolio includes publications in southern African and international journals, book chapters, popular media writing, and two single-authored monographs under development from my doctoral research.
