Lead Developer - National Atlas of the United States

Jun 2007Jul 2012 · 5 yrs 1 mo · Newport, OR

  • Converted the internal map engine for our Map Maker from a VB6 application to a database driven C#.NET application.
  • Migrated the National Atlas Map Maker interface from a complicated mixture of .ASP, Coldfusion 5, HTML and Javascript to a Ruby on Rails application. The Ruby on Rails application is using PostGIS to do the spatial queries and the internal map engine to create the map images.
  • Created a zoomable user interface in Flash for viewing maps of geologically significant areas. Specifically, showing how the USGS topographic maps have changed over time for the area as well as some aerial and shaded relief maps. The interface loads from xml so I also created a content management system in Ruby on Rails for the geographers so that they could be responsible for editing the locations.
  • Created a new set of OGC compliant Web Map Services for the National Atlas using MapServer and Python mapscript.
  • Implemented a content management system in Ruby on Rails that allows team members to edit the geographic content of the National Atlas, update the layout for the National Atlas Map Maker and edit or add new Web Map Services.
  • When first hired, I worked on an EPA project to create advanced forms for a Microsoft Access bioinformatics database. When they wanted to migrate to the web, I convinced them to use Ruby on Rails and developed the initial application with the goal of making it easy for them to take over.
  • Helped 6 employees learn Ruby on Rails and was able to hand over some of my projects to them.
  • Performed some system administration duties on 16 servers with different operating systems and assisted team members when they had difficulties with a task.

  • Primary work was in the research and development of eye controlled software. While working in the lab, I rewrote an eye drawing program to improve its responsiveness and to convert it to a .dll format so that it could be distributed with the LC Technologies EyeGaze eye tracker.
  • Additional research into how to do participatory design with children that have severe motor impairments. The software we were creating in the process was an eye controlled music program. Languages, IDEs and environments used were C/C++, VisualStudio .NET, Max/MSP, Windows, and Mac.
