About

E.M. Lewis-Jong is a founder, executive, and HCI researcher working at the intersection of community technology, open data, and inclusive AI. They are the Founder and CEO of the Mozilla Data Collective, a community-led platform for ethical creation, curation, and control of AI training datasets; built on the principle that people should be able to share their data on their own terms. They previously served as a VP at Mozilla Foundation, and the Director for Mozilla's Common Voice, an open-source platform enabling communities worldwide to preserve, revitalise, and contribute their languages to the future of speech tech. The co-Principal Investigator on a (cancelled) National Science Foundation project focused on inclusive American natural language processing, E.M. designed efforts to build community-owned datasets with underrepresented linguistic communities including African American Vernacular English, North American Spanish-English code-switching, and Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe). Before Mozilla, E.M. was a founding team member and Product Executive in civtech, leading the global learning platform for government used in 170+ countries, where they held product strategy from concept through Series A. She has collaborated with organisations including NVIDIA, the Gates Foundation, and GIZ on democratising speech technology and AI data equity across Africa, Asia and beyond. E.M. holds an MA in Modern History from the University of Oxford and is expecting a PhD in Informatics and Engineering at the University of Sussex, with research focused on controllability in conversational and voice AI for adolescents. They're a published researcher, product mentor, and a passionate advocate for a multilingual, multicultural, and community-centred tech future.

  • Hi! I love to work on community products - tech platforms that lift people up, and help them connect with each other around shared purpose. Currently I lead data products at Mozilla’s foundation, leading crowdsourcing and data curation for AI bias and multilingualism. Previously I was on the founding team for a civtech start up. I’ve spent more than a decade leading product and engineering teams who are trying to build tech that solves big social problems.
