• Invented containers. Company wide initiative of improving utilization of servers in Google data centers. Took initiative in understanding and developing resource isolation techniques (containers, cgroups) enabling a lot of Google applications to share single system resources (networking, memory, cpu and disk IO) without any visible impact on performance.
• Built a strong kernel team responsible for delivering world class system technologies for servers in Google data centers. My responsibilities include conceptualizing the requirements, translating them into technical solutions and working very closely with other infrastructure and apps teams. Main focus of this team is on kernel based technologies that improve system utilization, performance and support of new HW. Some of the key projects include cgroup based kernel scheduler enhancements to support latency critical and batch jobs at the same time, migration to ext4 based file system, support of extremely fast flash devices, networking enhancements to support 1G-10G, hugepages, Cloud infrastructure etc.

• Responsible for enabling key functionality and performance features for Intel platforms in Linux kernel. Work with HW architects to design new features for next generation chips. Actively took part in design and implementation discussions in Linux kernel. Worked extensively with key Linux OSVs (RH, SuSE etc) in driving critical features in their OSes. Lead cross-functional groups with in the company to design features like enabling virtualization on IPF, architecting VT on Xen, Chip errata etc.
• Technical Lead and Manager, Linux Core OS group (Feb’02 - Feb’05)
• Designed and developed Hugepages in Linux. Lead OS engineering team responsible for developing key features in Linux kernel for IA-32 and IA-64 architectures. The job responsibilities included hands-on implementation and very broad understanding of key kernel features. Responsible for creating team’s schedules, designing and reviewing development. Authored the hugetlb support in Linux and partnered with Oracle resulting in great performance for large DB like Oracle.
• Senior Staff Software Engineer, UNIX OS group (Feb’99 - Feb’02)
• Worked with key industry OSVs (IBM, SCO, SGI, Sequent, Digital, HP and Linux) with their ports to IA-64 architecture. Design and implemented key features in SCO’s Gemini64 OS (like low-level interrupt handling, machine initialization). Designed reference-OS code for the IA-64 architecture. Worked very closely with IBM architects in their port of AIX to IA-64. This included doing arch presentations and working with key architects to design solutions. Worked on key Linux and IA-32 architecture issues during power-on of new Intel chips. Architected IA-32EL for running IA-32 applications in IA-64 environment.

• Ported BE OS to IA-32 architecture. Worked heavily on the bootstrap loader, memory management and kernel (elf) loader functionalities.
