About

I provide opportunity/risk and threat management services in Europe, India, the Middle East and Africa. My clients include high networth investors, IP-rich startups and SMEs, PE funds and private banks, as well as retired military officers in sensitive geographies. Between 2009 and 2014, I completed a series of assignments, jointly with a law firm, for the US government. My work is typically undertaken where information asymmetry, political exposure or regulatory complexity involves major risk and requires judgement and discretion rather than off-the-shelf consulting. I previously worked with Shell's Global Scenarios team in London, developed a 20-year Vision Plan for Michelin's India, Africa and Middle East teams at its HQ in France, and guided EU product launches by Dow Chemical. I tested acceptance of a US military waste-to-energy system in India and Europe, selected sites on four continents for clinical trials by Eli Lilly and identified a high-speed American construction system for India’s first low-cost housing venture. I also lobbied the EU and was part of its task forces on innovation and supply chains. I have a rare familiarity with the cross-cultural choices and interactions central to a borderless world. Married to a Belgian from a family of diplomats, bankers and politicians, I have lived in the US and Europe for over three decades. My own family included a district magistrate, female legislator and Sandhurst-commissioned military officer in British India, followed by the industry minister in the Nehru cabinet, a governor, a diplomat and six members of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). My parents were university vice chancellors. My father graduated from Christ Church, Oxford, and Teachers College, Columbia, and my mother from the University of Minnesota. I work selectively and with discretion, typically advising principals, boards, and senior leadership rather than operational teams.

  • Identify and master opportunities in Europe and India, drawing upon two decades of my experience in both regions with New York consultancies Find/SVP and Kenterra.
  • Stress-test your European /India/ global strategy, based on a model I developed for Groupe Michelin.
  • Further value add:
  • Member of EU taskforces on innovation and supply chains. Developed concepts of 'borderless finance' and 'know-how' as a factor of production, both part of EU Lex: 'Official Journal of the EU' (Arts. 1.13 and 2.2, 2007/C 168/01).
  • Moderator at India/China seminars (for Directors, other senior EU officials and MPs) at Brussels think-tank 'The Centre', for whose journal E!Sharp I wrote the 'Eye on the Tigers' column on India and China.
  • Keynotes at EU conferences: Technopolicy (Finland), Agoria, CreaWAL, Leuven Inc. (Belgium), Institute of Directors (UK), Wolfsberg (Switzerland), International SME Summit and APDC (Portugal), and on panels alongside EU Commissioners, Heads of Cabinets, Ministers, MPs, CxOs and academics.
  • India is complex, and confusing. Little can replace a long-term cross-cultural view, from the top.
  • My family included a District Magistrate, female legislator and Sandhurst-commissioned military officer in British India, the Industry Minister from the 1950s to early 1960s, Governor of Gujarat and Bihar, a diplomat, three Vice Chancellors, two Major Generals and six members of the Indian civil services.
  • My perspectives on both India and the world were global from childhood.
  • My father studied at Columbia and Christ Church, Oxford. In 1954, my mother won the University of Minnesota Prize for "the Highest Scholarship in English Literature."
  • Visitors to our home, next to a Chief Minister's official residence, ranged from academics like Oxford's Asa Briggs, Heidelberg's Dietmar Rothermund and Harvard's Stephen Marglin to Jacob Sloan of USIS, Soviet Ambassador Nikolay Pegov and Lord Melvyn Bragg. Deborah Swallow, Courtauld Director, stayed with us for a year.

  • India strategy for corporations, funds and the EU. Keynote speaker and panelist with EU Commissioners and Ministers, MPs and CEOs (list of 'High Level Conferences' in media below). Described by UBS (2006) as one of the earliest interpreters of India's emergence.
  • In 2004, my book 'Rising Elephant' was published in the US, India and Europe. Launched at the India Economic Summit of the WEF, it was reviewed widely.
  • Far Eastern Economic Review described it as a "tour de force", while India Today noted how it addressed a "deficit of reasoned analysis" as India emerged as a world power. The book was extensively cited by Leader of the Opposition and former Deputy Prime Minister L.K Advani at the India Today Conclave.
  • My long-term perspectives on India have stood the test of time. Check out my keynote, on 'Linked In', to Tijd Academie in 1995, about Indian IT, or Lakshmi Mittal and Tata, a decade before they burst upon Europe. Read my opinion in the FT about India's Kargil military strategy, its IT being more than Y2K, the growing clout of Indian-Americans and the hype on BRICS. Watch my interview at the Institute of Directors, browse through my European Parliament presentation (an EU-India roadmap for two decades), or scan the India/China-EU seminars at Brussels think-tank 'The Centre', for whose journal E!Sharp I wrote the 'Eye on the Tigers' column. • 50+ consulting projects for mid-market US clients, focused on Europe, ranging from telemedicine and minimally invasive surgery to power transmission, the launch of a cardioverter-defibrillator by St. Jude and a new adhesive line by Dow Chemicals designed to pre-empt new EU regulations.
  • In 1996, published 250-page study, some years before NASSCOM-McKinsey, and forecast a $10 billion Indian IT industry in 2001. Identified five of today's eight Indian software product leaders and labelled India an "emerging IT superpower". Another report on Indian healthcare in 1997 looked at the explosive growth of medical tourism, and how Indian pharma firms would use their process engineering advantage in generics to turbocharge their growth globally. A final finding of note was the impact of the inevitable convergence of IT and healthcare. Other studies were dedicated to subjects ranging from building materials and video games to cosmetics. One defined and described India's enigmatic "middle class."
