Sqrrl

Co-Founder (acquired by Amazon)

Aug 2012Jan 2018 · 5 yrs 5 mos · Cambridge, MA

  • I was a co-founder of Sqrrl (now called Amazon Detective) and wore many hats over Sqrrl's 5 year history before Amazon Web Services (AWS) acquired Sqrrl in January 2018. Some of the things I did:
  • Marketing: Led the creation of a new security market segment for "Threat Hunting". Generated over 1500 net new leads, 500 MQLs, and 50 meetings per month on a minimal budget. Stood up marketing automation processes, built the website, led development of all initial marketing collateral, white papers, ebooks, and pitch decks.
  • Sales: Landed the first major commercial client for Sqrrl's Threat Hunting Platform (launched in May 2016); built Sqrrl's public sector business from scratch, including major wins at DoD, DHS, UK MOD. Stood up Salesforce platform and processes. Landed initial customer win in EMEA.
  • Business Development: Established partnerships with major resellers, SIs, and MSSPs, including Deloitte, HPE, and Wipro. Developed joint GTM strategies with technology partners, such as IBM QRadar, Splunk, Carbon Black, and HPE Arcsight.
  • Product management. Led the decision for Sqrrl to focus first on link analysis via a graph database backend and then the decision to focus on threat hunting.
  • COO/Board Member. Led initial fundraising efforts. Stood up legal and accounting tools and processes. Supported M&A efforts.
  • Sqrrl was the Threat Hunting Company that enables organizations to target, hunt, and disrupt advanced cyber threats. Sqrrl’s industry-leading Threat Hunting Platform unites graph analysis and visualization, machine learning, and multi-petabyte scalability capabilities into an integrated solution. Sqrrl’s unique approach enables security analysts to discover threats faster and reduces the time and resources required to investigate them. Sqrrl relaunched in December 2019 as Amazon Detective.

  • The National Security Council staff advises the President (through the National Security Advisor) on homeland and national security issues. I worked within the Cybersecurity Directorate that was comprised of representatives from DHS, CIA, NSA, DOJ, DOC, ODNI, and DOD. I led development of the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC) and worked on various other efforts such as cybersecurity legislation, cyber incident response, and policy analysis.

U.s. department of homeland security

Deputy Chief of Staff, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency

May 2008May 2009 · 1 yr · Washington, DC

  • The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency oversees DHS' infrastructure protection and cybersecurity efforts. I coordinated various policy and strategy efforts across the agency, such as the National Infrastructure Protection Plan, before being tapped for a detail to the White House.

Transportation security administration (tsa)

Director, Risk Management and Strategic Innovation

Sep 2005May 2008 · 2 yrs 8 mos · Arlington, VA

  • I led a team of 15 government employees charged with identifying critical risks to US transportation systems and coming up with innovative processes or technologies to mitigate those risks. One of those technologies was a new digital signature standard embedded in 2D barcodes to authenticate boarding passes, which mitigated an important vulnerability in terrorist watch lists. I also led the development of the first scenario-based, intelligence-driven quantitative risk analysis of the U.S. aviation system. This analysis identified the top 100 risk scenarios associated with the U.S. aviation system and calculated annual loss exposures for each of them using expert elicitation for frequencies and economic analysis on first and second order consequences.
